 PHARMACOLOGY

Pharmacology is a branch of science that deals with the study of drugs and their actions on living systems - that is, the study of how drugs work in the body (sometimes referred to as 'drug actions'). The two main areas of pharmacology are pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics. Pharmacodynamics studies the effects of a drug on biological systems, and pharmacokinetics studies the effects of biological systems on a drug.

Pharmacodynamics :  Which refers to the molecular, biochemical, and physiological effects of drugs, including drug mechanism of action. Pharmacodynamics refers to the relationship between drug concentration at the site of action and the resulting effect, including the time course and intensity of thera- peutic and adverse effects. The effect of a drug present at the site of action is determined by that drug's binding with a receptor.

Phrmacokinetics : Which refers to the absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion of drugs. Pharmacokinetics is currently defined as the study of the time course of drug absorption, distribution, metabo- lism, and excretion. Clinical pharmacokinetics is the application of pharmacokinetic principles to the safe and effective therapeutic management of drugs in an individual patient.
